About Heartreave

Heartreave - about the game

Heartreave is a strategy indie RPG for PC that blends turn-based combat with card-based mechanics in a persistent world of exploration and character growth. Players build and manage a party of heroes to fight through increasingly challenging encounters, where every battle unfolds through careful card selection and synergy building rather than real-time action.

Gameplay

Combat takes place in a turn-based system where fights rely entirely on a deck of skill cards. Each hero draws from a collection of cards that represent attacks, abilities, and effects tied to their element or weapon style. With 1,980 skill cards available across the roster, players customize decks extensively. Cards can evolve through player choices, altering their effects and opening new tactical options during battles.

Eleven distinct heroes form the core of any party. Each masters one of eight elements such as Fire, Ice, Water, Earth, Wind, Lightning, Holy, or Shadow, or specializes in a weapon approach like slashing, piercing, or blunt damage. Passives, talents, relics, and creature hearts layer on top of these cards to generate unique combinations. Permanent progression means heroes and collected loot carry forward across sessions, allowing builds to grow stronger over time without resetting runs.

Exploration drives the loop forward. Thirty-seven biomes house 140 creatures that feature varied mechanics and behaviors. Players navigate these areas, engage enemy groups, participate in events, and gather loot of different rarities. Difficulty scales with each outing, which in turn increases the value of rewards found.

Game Modes

Players can tackle the game solo by assembling and directing a party of up to four heroes. In online co-op, participants control one or more heroes together, sharing control of the group as they push deeper into the world. Leaderboards track exploration progress, encouraging optimization of builds and strategies to achieve higher scores.

Once heroes reach level 8, a ship unlocks access to seas containing 18 islands. Each island draws from an element, archetype, and rarity level. Clearing these islands yields Island Hearts that attach to skills, adding one bonus alongside one drawback. Beyond exploration level 100, Great Journeys become available as dedicated expeditions focused on hunting specific creature hearts. These runs pit players against creatures enhanced by affixes, with scores serving as another point of comparison against others.

Seasons refresh the experience roughly every three months. Each cycle resets leaderboards while introducing new features, heroes, mechanics, or modes that expand the available options. A hardcore mode removes any safety net: if the entire party falls in combat, the run ends permanently.

Progression and Builds

The emphasis on permanent retention of heroes and loot creates a long-term focus on synergy hunting. Players experiment with how passives interact with evolved cards and collected relics to overcome tougher biomes and creature groups. Events scattered through exploration add variety, while rarity-based loot encourages repeated outings to refine equipment and abilities.

Island Hearts and creature hearts from Great Journeys further customize playstyles. Attaching these items to skills introduces trade-offs that reward thoughtful planning. The system supports both solo experimentation and cooperative coordination, where multiple players can divide control of the party to manage complex fights.

Is It Worth Playing?

Heartreave suits players who enjoy deliberate, card-driven strategy within an RPG framework and appreciate persistent character development without roguelike resets. The combination of solo party management and online co-op provides flexibility for different group sizes. Seasonal updates keep mechanics fresh, while the hardcore option appeals to those seeking higher stakes. Those drawn to building intricate synergies across elements, weapons, and supporting items will find depth in the card evolution and heart systems. The game rewards careful deck construction and exploration planning over quick sessions.
