About Hand of Fate

Hand of Fate - about the game

Hand of Fate is a single-player action role-playing game that combines deck-building mechanics with roguelike progression and real-time combat. Players construct a deck of cards that determines the encounters, rewards, and challenges across procedurally arranged dungeon floors. The experience centers on strategic deck construction followed by direct control of a character in combat sequences that unfold from drawn cards.

Gameplay

The core loop begins with deck building outside of runs. Players select from unlocked cards that represent encounters, equipment, and events. Once the deck is set, the Dealer lays out a series of face-down cards that form the path through each floor. Moving across these cards reveals encounters that range from narrative choices and resource trades to direct combat. Successful runs grant new cards that expand future deck options, while failure ends the current attempt but preserves permanent unlocks.

Combat activates when a combat encounter card appears. The player then controls the character in a 3D arena using weapons and abilities drawn from the deck. These sequences emphasize timing and positioning against groups of enemies. Gear collected during runs modifies combat effectiveness and can carry forward as permanent additions to the available card pool. Food and health systems add resource management, requiring players to balance risk and recovery across floors.

Progression rewards experimentation. Each completed run contributes cards that alter future layouts and outcomes, creating variety in how paths unfold. The Dealer provides ongoing narration that comments on choices and results, framing the adventure as a contest against the deck itself.

Game Modes

Story Mode forms the primary campaign. Players advance through a sequence of thirteen bosses represented by the court cards of each suit plus the Dealer. Bosses must be defeated in a set order, though earlier ones can be revisited to farm additional rewards and cards. Each boss encounter requires navigating multiple floors built from the current deck.

Endless Mode becomes available after sufficient Story Mode progress. It generates an unlimited series of increasingly difficult floors using every card collected so far. The focus shifts to survival and high scores rather than a fixed endpoint, testing deck strength over extended runs.

Progression and Customization

Unlocks accumulate across runs and include new encounter cards, weapons, armor, artifacts, and special items. These additions allow players to tailor decks toward different strategies, such as emphasizing combat encounters or resource-gathering events. Hundreds of distinct cards exist, each contributing unique effects that change how floors generate and resolve. The system encourages repeated attempts to expand the collection and refine approaches against specific bosses.

Controller support enhances precision during combat sequences, though keyboard and mouse remain viable. Every playthrough differs based on the current deck composition and the random arrangement of encounter cards.

Is It Worth Playing?

Hand of Fate suits players who enjoy blending strategic deck construction with direct action combat in a roguelike framework. The single-player structure delivers consistent replayability through expanding card options and two distinct modes. Reception has been generally positive, with praise for the seamless integration of card mechanics into a living adventure and the variety of encounters that keep runs distinct. Those seeking a focused experience without multiplayer elements will find the systems rewarding after initial runs, particularly once Endless Mode opens for longer challenges. The game remains available on PC with its complete feature set intact since release.
