Grandparadox is a co-operative strategy game that blends digital board game elements with time travel mechanics. Players work together to travel backward through Grandad's life, eliminating versions of him decade by decade until the paradox is complete with the defeat of baby Grandad.
Gameplay
The core loop revolves around three main actions on each turn. In the kill phase, the group confronts Grandad in the current decade by playing weapons, using youth potions, and rolling dice to overcome his energy level. Success removes that version and all older ones from play. The farm action draws from a large deck of cards that can provide powerful items like tanks or anime swords, or result in nothing at all. Aging forward a decade grants access to more resources for future confrontations. Time travel allows the group to roll and move backward through decades, triggering immediate battles if Grandad remains alive upon arrival.
Failure to eliminate Grandad pushes the player forward in time, aging them instead. Excessive aging leads to death and penalties in the standard ruleset. At any point, players can age Grandad or themselves to adjust difficulty, pass items across turns to teammates, or collaborate on strategies. The younger Grandad becomes or the older a player grows, the tougher the challenge grows, especially with more participants or higher difficulty settings.
Game Modes
Grandparadox supports solo play against bots or sessions with up to nine additional players in online co-op. The available mode is classic, which includes four difficulty options ranging from easy to impossible. These settings scale Grandad's strength and the overall demands on coordination and resource management. Additional modes such as permadeath and a race-style player-versus-player option are planned for future updates, along with couch co-op and controller support.
Accessibility and Future Plans
Post-release development focuses on expanding play options and improving inclusivity. Planned features include adjustable text sizes, fonts, and colors, plus a text-to-speech narrator for players with visual impairments. These changes aim to broaden participation without altering the core time-travel strategy experience.
Is It Worth Playing?
Grandparadox suits players who enjoy co-operative strategy games with light board game influences and unusual themes. The emphasis on teamwork, card management, and calculated risks in a time-travel framework offers a distinct session structure that rewards planning and communication. Those seeking casual to challenging group experiences on PC will find the classic mode provides varied replayability through its difficulty tiers and shared item system. The free-to-play model and indie development approach make it accessible for testing the mechanics directly.
