About Fate/EXTRA Record

Fate/EXTRA Record - about the game

Fate/EXTRA Record is a single-player Action RPG that places players in the role of a Master during the Moon Holy Grail War. Set in the digital realm of SE.RA.PH. on the moon, the game follows 128 Master-Servant pairs as they compete for the Holy Grail in a tournament of survival and self-discovery. The title serves as a full remake of the 2010 PSP original, with an expanded scenario, updated character designs, and a revised battle system centered on deck building.

Gameplay

Players control a Master who contracts with one of three available Servants, each offering distinct abilities and combat styles. Exploration takes place in dungeon sections of the Arena, where the goal is to gather resources, level up the Servant, and collect intelligence on rival pairs. Information on an opponent's True Name reveals their class, strengths, and weaknesses, which becomes critical for the decisive battle at the end of each week-long cycle. The seven-day preparation window requires careful planning of daily actions to maximize advantages before the final confrontation.

Combat occurs in Command Card Battles that emphasize strategy over direct control. Players construct a deck from Attack commands that deal damage, Guard commands that build shields, and Skill commands that provide unique effects tied to the chosen Servant. During fights, a hand of cards is drawn randomly, and actions are selected while managing a limited pool of AP. Depleting AP prevents further moves, forcing players to prioritize and adapt based on the opponent's visible intentions. New commands are acquired through dungeon exploration and victories against strong foes, encouraging experimentation with different Servant pairings and deck compositions.

Game Modes

The core experience revolves around the structured progression of the Holy Grail War itself. Each week begins with an assigned opponent, followed by a preparation phase of dungeon runs and information gathering. These phases lead directly into high-stakes Command Card Battles that determine survival. The tournament format continues until only one pair remains, with the story unfolding through the accumulating victories and personal revelations of the Master and Servant.

Dungeon exploration serves as the primary activity outside of battles. Players navigate digital environments to locate treasure, confront enemies, and uncover details about upcoming rivals. This loop integrates directly with the weekly deadline system, where incomplete preparation can lead to disadvantages in the decisive encounter.

Story and Setting

The narrative centers on the bonds formed between Masters and Servants amid the deadly contest. Set against the backdrop of a vast digital world, the plot explores themes of desire, survival, and identity as participants pursue their wishes through the Holy Grail. The expanded scenario builds on the original events while introducing refreshed visuals and character interactions that highlight the emotional stakes of each contract.

Multiple Servants bring varied personalities and backstories into the mix, influencing both dialogue and tactical options. The single-player focus keeps the emphasis on personal progression through the war rather than external competition.

Is It Worth Playing?

Fate/EXTRA Record targets players who enjoy story-driven RPGs with strategic depth and a strong emphasis on character relationships. The combination of timed preparation phases, information warfare through dungeon exploration, and the new deck-building combat system creates a deliberate pace suited to those who appreciate planning and adaptation over fast reflexes. With its single-player structure and focus on one central narrative arc, the game appeals most to fans of the Fate series or similar visual novel-influenced titles seeking a self-contained experience.

Since the title has not yet released, no player reception data or review scores are available. Its value will depend on how well the revamped systems deliver on the promise of meaningful deck strategy and Servant customization. Those drawn to tactical command battles and the Holy Grail War premise may find the structured weekly loop rewarding once it arrives on PC and other platforms in January 2027.
