About Fallen Aces

Fallen Aces - about the game

Fallen Aces is a single-player FPS crime noir set in the fictional Switchblade City. Players take on the role of a lone fighter investigating the downfall of the A.C.E.S., once the city's guardians, amid layers of crime, corruption, and betrayal. The game blends fast-paced action with immersive sim elements, delivering a story-driven experience through hand-drawn comic cutscenes and authentic period dialogue.

Gameplay

The core loop centers on navigating detailed, hand-drawn environments where every object can serve as a tool or weapon. Combat mixes melee strikes with firearms, allowing players to improvise using items like pipes, bats, trash cans, or frying pans alongside pistols, shotguns, nail guns, spear guns, and Tommy guns. Movement and interaction emphasize player agency, with options to approach situations through direct confrontation or careful positioning.

Levels feature non-linear layouts that reward exploration and experimentation. Players decide whether to prioritize stealth to avoid detection, engage enemies head-on, or combine both approaches within the same mission. This flexibility extends to how objectives are completed, encouraging multiple playthroughs of the same areas with different tactics. The hand-drawn art style and animation give every encounter a distinctive comic-book feel, while voice lines add personality to enemies and civilians alike.

Melee and ranged options integrate seamlessly, creating opportunities for creative problem-solving. Environmental hazards and destructible elements further expand tactical choices during fights. The overall pace mixes deliberate planning with sudden bursts of violence, fitting the gritty noir tone.

Game Modes

Fallen Aces operates as a single-player campaign structured around episodic releases. The first episode, Heart of Glass, is fully available and contains multiple levels with high replayability through varied paths and approaches. Future episodes will expand the narrative across a planned total of three parts and dozens of levels.

Replay value comes from the non-linear design rather than separate modes. Each level supports different strategies, from silent takedowns to all-out firefights, and the inclusion of a level editor with Steam Workshop support allows community-created content to extend the experience. No dedicated multiplayer modes exist; the focus remains on solo progression through the story and its branching possibilities.

Story and Presentation

The narrative unfolds through fully voiced, hand-drawn comic cutscenes that advance the plot of heroes, villains, and shifting alliances. Authentic gangster-era dialogue fills the world with flavor, giving characters distinct voices and attitudes. The setting of Switchblade City serves as a backdrop for themes of betrayal and redemption, delivered across episodic chapters that build on one another.

Visuals stay consistent with 100 percent original hand-drawn artwork and animation. Sound design supports the noir atmosphere with period-appropriate effects and music that heightens tension during key sequences. The combination of comic aesthetics and interactive violence creates a cohesive presentation that stands apart from typical modern shooters.

Is It Worth Playing?

Fallen Aces sits in Early Access with the complete first episode available and polished. A level editor and Steam Workshop integration have been added through updates, increasing replay options beyond the base campaign. Steam user reviews stand at Overwhelmingly Positive across more than five thousand ratings, with recent feedback also landing in the Very Positive range.

The game suits players who enjoy single-player FPS experiences with strong emphasis on choice, environmental interaction, and narrative delivery. Those drawn to immersive sim mechanics, retro-inspired combat, and hand-crafted art will find the current content substantial. Continued episodic releases and community tools suggest ongoing expansion, making it a solid option for fans of the genre who prefer games that reward experimentation over linear progression.
