About Damage Xiangqi

Damage Xiangqi - about the game

Damage Xiangqi is a strategy game that reimagines traditional Chinese chess on PC in Early Access. It shifts the focus from instant captures to a system built around hit points, attack values, and defense ratings for each piece. Players grind down opponents through repeated strikes rather than removing them in a single move, introducing layers of risk and recovery that change how the board develops over time.

Gameplay

The core loop centers on managing three actions each turn, with the first player limited to one action on their opening move. These actions allow advancing pieces, positioning for attacks, or delivering strikes. Damage rolls randomly on each hit, and an attacked piece has a chance to counterattack immediately. This setup turns every engagement into a calculated risk, as overcommitting can leave units exposed to retaliation.

Traditional Xiangqi movement rules remain in place. Horses require clear paths for their L-shaped leaps, elephants stay confined to their half of the board, and soldiers gain the ability to move sideways once they cross the river. The palace restricts the general and advisors, while the flying general rule prevents direct opposition across the board center. Cannons follow chariot movement but require exactly one intervening piece to attack, and a successful killing blow lets the cannon leap forward onto the target square.

Without checkmate as the win condition, the game continues until one general's hit points reach zero. Check serves only as a warning signal. The randomized damage and counter mechanics keep tension high throughout, encouraging players to weigh aggression against preservation of their forces.

Game Modes

Single-player options pit users against four tiers of CPU opponents labeled Weak, Normal, Strong, and Expert. These provide graduated challenges for learning the altered mechanics or refining tactics without external pressure.

Multiplayer support focuses on direct matches with friends through invite systems or room codes. The implementation uses deterministic lockstep synchronization to maintain consistent states across connections, and it includes reconnection support if sessions drop. No public matchmaking or ranked ladders appear in the current build.

Customization and Rules

Players can adjust damage variance, counterattack success rates, and the number of actions available per turn. Individual piece statistics for hit points, attack, and defense can be edited separately. Additional toggles allow modification of core rules such as the face-off ban. These options let users tailor the experience from near-standard Xiangqi to highly variable encounters.

Language support covers Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Japanese, and English, broadening accessibility for different player bases.

Is It Worth Playing?

Damage Xiangqi appeals to those who enjoy Xiangqi but want deeper tactical sequencing and less decisive single moves. The three-action turns and health-based combat reward careful planning and adaptation to random outcomes. CPU opponents across multiple difficulty levels offer solid practice, while online friend play provides direct competition with reliable connectivity features.

The game remains in Early Access, so the feature set centers on the described systems without additional confirmed content like seasonal updates or expanded modes. Players seeking a deliberate, customizable take on the classic board game will find the core loop engaging, particularly if they value positional control and risk management over quick resolutions. Those preferring standard capture rules or faster matches may prefer unmodified Xiangqi variants instead.
