About Cosmolon

Cosmolon - about the game

Cosmolon is a top-down space shooter where waves upon waves of enemies move towards you as time goes on. As a frigate ship, you are not well equipped to fight off enemy factions...which is why you need to gain enough experience to level up.

Each enemy faction contains different ships designed to attack you by shooting projectiles, ramping up their movement speed, and even spawning other ships.

As you fend off the enemy ships, you can collect power-ups, level up, and even receive permanent stat upgrades. Fly and survive all the waves and see how far you can make it. You might even come out on top.

Cosmolon features a simple combat system. As a space frigate, your main way of attacking is through the plasma bolts you fire from the sides. At first, this can be challenging, since your ship is not initially designed for fast combat, unlike typical fighter ships.

The good news is that you'll get to recruit support fighter ships to help against future waves. And if you prefer to solo it, empower your plasma bolts to become more multitudinous and powerful for more precise fighting.

As a COIN medium-sized frigate, you start off with decent speed and acceleration. You can even engage your plasma boost core to boost across the galaxy (at least for a while!) Keep fighting off those waves to move faster and max out your boost recovery and acceleration.

Combine quick, tactical movement with the right weapons and nonstop combat, and you'll turn your basic frigate into something that can blast through waves of enemy factions.

In Cosmolon, you can level up your booster and stats, your primary weapons, and even have extra fighter ships as support. Leveling up requires earning experience, which means destroying ships and collecting the orbs they drop.

You might even run into unique enemy ships. These can drop a random permanent stat upgrade for the current round. Just be careful, since these ships keep getting stronger!

The vastness of space is bound to come with many different enemies, so beware. From simple Purple Scrappers designed for mining to enemy frigates, get ready to learn all sorts of attack patterns.

Some ships may rush at you. Others will fire projectiles or move in ways that are tricky to navigate, so don't let your guard down.

In later waves, combinations of enemies will appear, which could definitely cause you a rough time, so be prepared!

An arcade and MS-DOS-inspired game like Cosmolon better have power-ups! This game has several that can change up your gameplay and even save you in dire situations.

Much of the information regarding these powerups is [REDACTED], but apparently, there is a gem that not only causes you to deal a lot more damage, but also makes you glimmer with invincibility. They're said to take inspiration from a game called Commander [REDACTED], but that's just a rumor.

From the handcrafted pixel art to the music, everything you see has been made by me, Se7enZ. I take a lot of inspiration from chiptune in terms of music, as well as retro MS-DOS games. This is my first game (with me slowly learning coding), so I hope you all enjoy it! Come along with me on this journey; I'm excited to see how it goes!

For the pixel art, I used a program called Aseprite. During the process, I looked at references to get a basic understanding of classic pixel art spaceship design and made up my own ideas. I've been doing pixel art for just over 2 years, so seeing what's possible has been quite fun.

For the music and sound effects, I used a website called Beepbox. I have never truly crafted my own audio before, so the music tracks you hear are made through experimentation with the program. I want to thank those behind Beepbox for creating a program that can help those of us getting into game design!

As for the coding, I want to personally thank Branno and his amazing video game guide on coding this type of game. If you're looking to get into game design, I highly recommend checking out his guide on YouTube! Cosmolon primarily uses the code in that guide through the tutorial. Oh, and the game engine is Godot!

Hey! My name, as you probably have noticed given the bright pixel art, is Se7enZ. I am new to game development, with Cosmolon being my first game. I have a lot to learn, and with the modern digital age, I want to bring back a lot of the classic MS-DOS games' aesthetic and sensibilities into any future games.

Although it is called Se7enZ Studio, it is just me. One dude. I want everything I make to be my own or to come from working with people who are equally passionate about what we do here. With Cosmolon and all future projects, I'll always be upfront with what they are, how they're designed, and where credit's due.

The biggest area that I'm learning is programming, specifically with Godot. Branno's guide makes up A LOT of the code within Cosmolon (credit where it's due!) Everything else is just me figuring things out!

Cosmolon is complete, but I hope you come along with me on this journey of making more games. So, grab your favorite drink (mine is coffee), play a few rounds, and let's see what we can create - together!
