About Coin and Banner

Coin and Banner - about the game

Coin and Banner is a medieval sandbox RPG that blends strategy, simulation, and role-playing elements on PC. Players begin as an unknown figure with little more than a purse and a road ahead, then build a mercenary company through jobs, bandit hunts, and tournaments before swearing service to lords or raising their own banner. The experience centers on managing men, coin, and food while navigating a living world of five realms that shift between war and peace in each fresh campaign.

Gameplay

The core loop revolves around hiring individual soldiers one at a time, learning their trades, training their strengths, and monitoring their morale and relationships. Each man carries a name, earns honors, sustains wounds, and forms friendships or rivalries within the company. Fourteen soldier types span spears, pikes, men-at-arms, bows, crossbows, and mages who wield the Spark as battlemages, healing warders, spellblades, or arcane archers. Fifteen techniques such as Cleave, Double Shot, Rain, and Pillar of Fire allow customization of tactics. Supply lines matter constantly: food depletes during marches, wages must be paid on time, winter limits foraging, and mules plus wagons add their own consumption needs. Trade routes, bandit activity, and market shortages create opportunities or obstacles as caravans move goods across the map.

Combat unfolds in real time with formation setup, volley timing, charges, and rallies. Direct control of the hero character remains an option, or players can rely on sergeants and intervene selectively. After victory, choices include prioritizing the surgeon for wounded men, distributing honors, and allocating a fallen soldier's kit. Sieges require constructing ladders, rams, and towers while both sides consume supplies. Breaching walls with fire callers leads to fights on battlements and then into town squares, where overstaying risks a relief force arriving from behind. Captured towns offer decisions on mercy, tribute, or the sack, followed by tax and edict setting, construction projects, and appointment of a governor from the company ranks. Detachments can patrol holdings or hunt bandits, though garrisons left unpaid or unfed may turn.

Game Modes

Coin and Banner presents a single continuous sandbox campaign rather than separate named modes. Each playthrough generates a new world with five realms in shifting alliances. Players advance from earning initial coins through contracts to swearing fealty under another banner or raising their own. Land holdings, alliances, and reputation determine influence among other lords. The path to rule includes conquest of towns or victory in the Moot of Crowns. Once crowned, players may continue governing or step away. Seven companions bring distinct perspectives on company composition and decisions. Permanent loss occurs when men die, with their names, deeds, and final battles recorded in the Hall of Banners.

World and Progression

The setting emphasizes realism over prophecy or chosen-one narratives. Everything traces back to men, coin, food, and loyalty. Campaigns reset the world state while preserving core systems for repeated play. Supply management intersects with diplomacy as trade disruptions affect markets and spawn camps. Choosing routes balances speed, safety, and foraging potential. Holding territory demands ongoing attention to garrisons and patrols, creating a loop where battlefield success leads directly into administrative and logistical challenges.

Is It Worth Playing?

Coin and Banner suits players who enjoy methodical management of mercenary forces, tactical formation combat, and long-term company building in a medieval context. The emphasis on named soldiers with personal histories and permanent consequences adds weight to every engagement. Those drawn to simulation elements such as supply lines, wages, and town governance will find depth in the systems that connect battles to broader strategy. The indie scope keeps the focus tight on company leadership without extraneous features. Reception centers on the satisfying progression from lone fighter to ruler through earned alliances and conquest, though the experience demands patience with logistics and attrition. It appeals most to fans of sandbox strategy titles that reward careful planning over spectacle.
