About Cellscape

Cellscape - about the game

Experience life as a microbe!

Your goal is to survive as long as possible and divide as many times as you can. You’ll navigate a dynamic, continuously changing ecosystem with a variety of predators, hazards, and resources you can use strategically to your advantage.

Cellscape is a little different each time you play, with populations and the very structure of the landscape around you all shifting in response to one another. Bacteria build soil clusters, which create the foundations for an increasingly complex habitat, and they provide food for smaller flagellates like yourself, which in turn provide food for larger predators. Some predators are active, while others are passive. Some have preferences, others are generalists.

All artwork is hand-drawn by myself, inspired by real microbes.

Features added so far:
  • Eat bacteria until you grow big enough to divide

  • Divide as many times as you can before you die

  • Four types of bacteria with different effects when you eat them (many more to come!)

  • A dynamic soil environment that starts as loose mineral particles and gradually develops into increasingly large soil clusters

  • Bacteria push loose particles together and cause them to form clusters

  • NPC flagellates that wander, eat bacteria, and divide to grow their own populations

  • Predators with unique behaviours depending on the species

  • A heliozoan that stuns you if you touch its spines

  • Heliozoan also stuns predators, so you can use it to escape if you're careful!

  • Populations of both predator and prey species develop naturally as they eat and reproduce, or get eaten themselves

Planned features:
  • Many more types of bacteria, flagellates, and predators

  • More unique hazards such as Suctorians which will reduce your growth stage

  • Bacterial mats which can give you buffs and debuffs on contact

  • Fungi (specific mechanics for these are not decided yet)

  • Plant roots creating special zones with various effects on the microbial community

  • Steam achievements!
