Train Sim World 5 is a train simulation game developed by Dovetail Games and released for PC in September 2024. It places players in the role of operating realistic locomotives across detailed routes, managing controls, safety systems, and schedules in a single-player environment focused on authentic rail operations.
Gameplay
The core loop centers on precise train handling. Players adjust throttle, brakes, and direction while monitoring signals, speed limits, and route-specific safety systems that vary by region and operator. Different locomotives demand attention to unique characteristics, such as power delivery in electric or diesel units. Route hopping and fast travel allow quick movement between sections of a line or connected networks to maintain momentum during longer sessions. An updated live map provides a real-time overhead view with station labels and service details to aid navigation and planning.
Additional tools support customization and creativity. The Creators Club enables creation and sharing of custom scenarios and liveries. A photo mode captures moments along the tracks. These elements integrate with the simulation to extend play beyond standard driving tasks without altering the fundamental focus on accurate rail procedures.
Game Modes
Timetable mode requires selecting a scheduled service and operating it on time amid passenger and freight traffic, including AI-controlled trains. This mode emphasizes adherence to real-world-style schedules across full route days.
Scenarios present structured challenges with specific objectives, such as learning controls or handling particular conditions like weather or incidents. They serve as guided experiences to build familiarity with different locomotives and routes.
Free Roam grants open access to spawn trains, select paths, and experiment without time constraints. Conductor Mode introduces a distinct role on passenger services, involving ticket checks, door operation, baggage management, and passenger safety oversight as a break from driving duties.
Routes and Content
The base experience includes three new routes. The West Coast Main Line segment runs from London Euston to Milton Keynes with high-speed passenger services. The San Bernardino Line covers commuter and freight movements in California. The Frankfurt to Fulda line features operations in Germany. Previous content carries over where compatible, expanding options through additional locomotives and formations.
Training resources in the free starter pack introduce fundamentals across steam, diesel, and electric traction before progressing to full routes. These elements combine to support both short practice sessions and extended operations.
Is It Worth Playing?
Player reception on Steam stands at mostly positive based on thousands of reviews. The simulation delivers accurate physics and systems that appeal to those seeking detailed rail experiences. New additions like Conductor Mode and improved navigation tools add variety for returning players while the route selection provides a strong starting point for newcomers.
Support continues with updates that refine features and add compatibility. A free starter pack allows testing core tools without purchase. Those interested in methodical, realistic train operation will find substantial depth here. Players preferring action-oriented or multiplayer formats may find the pace and focus less engaging. The game suits dedicated simulation enthusiasts who value precision and route exploration over rapid progression.
