Xbox is testing a free way to stream the games you already bought, and the price is a commercial before you play. Microsoft flipped the switch on July 23 for members of the Xbox Insider Program. No subscription, no card on file, just an ad and then an hour of streaming.
The rules fit on a napkin. You stream games you own. A session runs one hour. Ads play before the session starts and not while you're playing, which is the part Microsoft keeps repeating in its own post: "We do not interrupt the flow of gameplay." It's live for a limited time, on supported devices and in supported regions, and Xbox is openly calling the whole thing a test.
Your own library, minus the subscription
This isn't a free buffet. There's no catalog attached, so if a game isn't already sitting on your account, no amount of ads will unlock it. Sites that have poked at the test streamed things like Forza Horizon 6 and 007 First Light, which tells you the shape of it: big modern games you'd rather not wait on a download for.
That's the actual pitch. Streaming games you own has existed since 2024, but it lived behind Game Pass Ultimate. Now the door is open to anyone with an Xbox account who signs up as an Insider.
Why now, and what it says about Game Pass
Context explains a lot here. Microsoft pushed Ultimate up to $29.99 a month in late 2025, took a very loud beating for it, and walked the price back to $22.99 in April. PC Game Pass came down too, from $16.49 to $13.99. Cloud streaming sits inside Essential, Premium and Ultimate, but not inside PC Game Pass, which has always been a strange gap in the lineup.

So a free ad-funded tier looks less like generosity and more like a funnel. Get people used to playing on a phone, in a browser or on the TV, then sell them the plan that switches off the timer. You can line up what each plan actually includes on our subscriptions page.
Our take
An hour covers a few Forza races or a chunk of a story mission. It doesn't cover replacing a console. GamingBolt puts the pre-roll at roughly two minutes, and reporting from October 2025 mentioned a cap of five sessions a month, which Microsoft didn't confirm in this announcement. That's the number worth watching. Two minutes for an hour of play is a fair trade. Two minutes for an hour, five times a month, is a demo.
Still, free cloud access to games you already paid for is a good thing, and the fact that the ads stay out of the actual game puts this ahead of most models out there.
