Marvel Rivals Age of Ultron PvE Mode Launches July 30

Marvel Rivals is about to let you punch Ultron in the face without six other players getting in the way. NetEase and Marvel Games used their San Diego Comic-Con panel on July 24 to reveal Path to Doomsday: Avengers: Age of Ultron, a PvE mode that goes live on July 30 (UTC).

The teaser runs about 40 seconds. Most of it is Scarlet Witch holding a corridor while Ultron's sentries pour through the walls. Short, loud, effective.

What you actually get

The setup: the Ultron Virus breaks into Avengers Tower, corrupts F.R.I.D.A.Y. and turns the building into a shooting gallery. You pick Avengers heroes and fight through two areas, Avengers Tower and Ultron's Data Space. NetEase says there are new cinematics, and dialogue from the 2015 film has been re-recorded by the game's own voice cast, so it should not land as a map with a fresh coat of paint.

What nobody explained on stage: squad size, difficulty options, how long the event sticks around, what you earn for finishing it. All of that is still blank.

Path to Doomsday keeps changing shape

This is not the first movie tie-in of the season. The Avengers mode back in May ran as asymmetric PvP, there has been an Endgame themed event too, and now the versus part gets dropped entirely. Whether it stays dropped is another matter, because NetEase confirmed more Path to Doomsday modes and events for December, built around Avengers: Doomsday and Doctor Doom. The film opens December 18. Game side details: none so far.

Costumes, a remix and a lot of plastic

The panel also handed Scarlet Witch and Ultron their Age of Ultron outfits, gave Winter Soldier a look pulled from his own movie, and put Luna Snow's Carmine Cassette costume in the store, where it stays until August 21 at 02:00 UTC. Her track Flight Mode got a Van Dyne remix on streaming services. On the shelf: a 12 inch Mattel Jeff plush, Funko Pops of Jeff, Deadpool and Cloak and Dagger, plus a Hot Toys Luna Snow figure that ships with a code for the Mirae 2099 skin.

Our take: Rivals has spent the whole year building content around the Marvel movie calendar, but this is the first time the mode against the computer is the headline instead of a weekend curiosity. If the Tower run has teeth, NetEase walks into December with real goodwill. If it is twenty minutes of shooting robots, well, at least it is free.
