Square Enix has set the Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster for July 23 as a download on Nintendo's new hardware, with a physical version following on August 27. If you own a Switch 2 and somehow never made it to Zanarkand, this is your moment.
Yes, the remaster has been floating around for years now, on PS3, PS4, PC and the original Switch. So why care about another port? Because this one runs natively on Switch 2, and it packs in pretty much everything Square has ever crammed into this bundle. Two full games, the International extras that never left Japan back in the day, the arranged soundtrack, and the "Will" audio drama that picks up a year after X-2 wraps. That is a lot of Spira for one cartridge.
What you actually get
Both Final Fantasy X and its poppier sequel X-2 are here, remade in full HD. The quality-of-life toggles longtime fans swear by are along for the ride too: a high-speed mode to blitz through the grindier stretches, and the option to switch off random encounters when you just want to explore. Handy if you have crossed the Calm Lands more times than you would like to admit.
Right on time for the anniversary
The timing is no accident. Final Fantasy X originally launched in Japan on July 19, 2001, so it is turning 25 basically the same week this Switch 2 version drops. Whether you are a Blitzball obsessive or the type who still cannot forgive that laughing scene, it is a neat little bow on a quarter-century of one of the most beloved JRPGs ever made. And for newcomers, forty-nine bucks for two massive games is a genuinely easy sell.
Our take? FFX still holds up. The Sphere Grid, the voice acting (yes, even the laugh), that ending that wrecked a generation of teenagers. If you have a Switch 2 and a soft spot for old-school JRPGs, this is a no-brainer pickup.
