10 Most Demanding PC Games in 2026: Testing the RTX 5090

You spent four figures on an RTX 5090, told yourself "now I can finally turn everything to Ultra and forget about it," and then loaded Cyberpunk 2077 with path tracing in 4K. Welcome to 2026. The most demanding PC games still find creative ways to embarrass a 32 GB graphics card.

If there's one pattern I can't unsee in this list, it's that almost every entry shipped between 2023 and 2025. Those were the years when path tracing went mainstream and Unreal Engine 5 started eating VRAM for breakfast. The other pattern is even less subtle: half of them launched broken. The good news is that most got patched. The bad news is that even after the patches, your GPU is the one paying the bill.

Here are the ten games I'd point to in 2026 when someone says "my new build can run anything."

Which graphics card runs everything in 2026?

Short answer: the RTX 5090 is the only card that survives 4K Ultra with full ray tracing and no upscaling crutches. The RTX 4090 still does the job, but it leans on DLSS 4 with Multi Frame Generation in the heaviest scenes, sometimes inserting three or four interpolated frames between every real one. Cards like the RTX 4070 Ti Super and RX 7900 XT handle 1440p with upscaling. Push them to 4K Ultra with ray tracing and they fall apart.

The bigger problem is VRAM. Sixteen gigabytes is the new floor for 4K, and several titles on this list happily eat 20-22 GB at maximum textures. The RTX 5090 ships with 32 GB GDDR7 and 1792 GB/s of bandwidth, which buys you a comfortable 2-3 years. The RTX 4090 with 24 GB still gets you most of the way but starts wheezing in the worst cases. On the CPU side, anything below a Ryzen 7 7800X3D or Core Ultra 9 285K will bottleneck a flagship GPU. Yes, even at 4K. The "you don't need a great CPU for 4K" advice has been wrong for a year now, and I keep meeting people who haven't gotten the memo.

Remedy launched Alan Wake 2 in October 2023 and decided not to bother with a fallback. The Northlight engine runs full path tracing through DirectX 12 Ultimate with Mesh Shaders, and there is no rasterization safety net. Global illumination, reflections, shadows, ambient occlusion, all RT, all the time. There's something almost rude about a studio shipping a game in 2023 that can still bring an RTX 5090 to its knees today.

At 4K with full path tracing, the 5090 typically sits around 90-110 fps with DLSS Quality plus Frame Generation. The RTX 4090 drops to 50-65 fps in the same spot. Switch DLSS off entirely and you're at 30 fps even on the best card you can buy. The Lake House DLC from October 2024 added two short chapters that punish hardware just as hard. Main story takes 17-20 hours, longer if you stop to admire the lighting. And honestly, you should.

Cyberpunk 2077 has been the default GPU benchmark for two years, and there's a reason for that. CD Projekt Red dropped RT Overdrive (full path tracing) in patch 1.62 in April 2023, Phantom Liberty arrived that September with Dogtown, and the game went from "the launch joke of 2020" to "the thing every reviewer benchmarks first" in about eighteen months.

RT Overdrive at 4K still bullies the RTX 5090 unless you turn on DLSS 4 with Multi Frame Generation, which finally pushes it past 100 fps. The RTX 4090 sits at 25-30 fps native, climbing to around 70 fps with DLSS Quality plus Frame Generation. Patch 2.2 from December 2024 added ray reconstruction and smarter road AI. Walk through Night City after dark with everything cranked, and the way every neon, every puddle, every street lamp casts physically correct light is honestly worth the upgrade if you can afford it. If you can't, well, that's what DLSS Performance is for.

GSC Game World finally shipped S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 on November 20, 2024, after years of delays and one war that nearly killed the project. Unreal Engine 5 with Nanite and Lumen renders 64 km² of Zone in detail nobody else has tried at this scale. Day one optimization was rough, the kind of "did anyone test this" rough, but patches 1.1 and 1.2 through 2025 cleaned up most of it.

The RTX 5090 holds 55-75 fps at 4K Epic with ray tracing on, with DLSS Quality. Watch out for the CPU though. A-Life 2.0, the system that makes the Zone feel alive, can choke even a Ryzen 9 9950X3D in dense areas like the Lesser Zone. The bottleneck shifts from GPU to CPU faster than you'd expect, and there's not much you can do about it except turn down NPC density. Anomalies with their particle effects add another 10-15% load on top. Plan for 152 GB of disk space, and a fast SSD. This game streams constantly.

Warhorse Studios out of Prague released KCD II on February 4, 2025, and somehow squeezed CryEngine harder than anyone has in years. Medieval Bohemia shows it. Individual blades of grass, fabric that actually moves on the characters, shadows from every leaf in the forest. The map is twice the size of the original at around 16 km², and the game sold over 2 million copies in its first week, which surprised exactly nobody.

4K Ultra can pull over 20 GB of VRAM, which is wild for what looks like a "normal" RPG. The RTX 5090 runs 70-90 fps native, the RTX 4090 sits at 50-65 fps. Turn on RT for reflections and global illumination and you lose another 30-40%. Siege battles with 50+ NPCs on screen will hammer your CPU. CryEngine has always been a hardware hog, and this title is no exception.

Asobo Studio out of Bordeaux released MSFS 2024 on November 19, 2024 and rebuilt the entire planet with photographic accuracy. Photogrammetry for over 60 cities, volumetric clouds with real microphysics, a global weather system. The launch broke their servers when 200,000 players tried to log in at once. Classic Microsoft.

By the time the December 2024 and January 2025 patches landed, things stabilized. The RTX 5090 holds 70-90 fps at 4K Ultra over open terrain, dropping to 45-55 fps over Manhattan with full AI air traffic on. This is one of those benchmarks that humbles every system you throw at it. It also taxes your internet. Azure streaming wants at least 50 Mbps, ideally 100+, or scenery starts loading in chunks. CPU bottlenecks show up faster here than almost anywhere else on this list.

Avalanche Software released Hogwarts Legacy on February 10, 2023, and underneath the Wizarding World wrapper sits Unreal Engine 4 with ray tracing for shadows, reflections, and ambient occlusion. The game looks unassuming until you crank everything to 4K Ultra with RT on, and then you notice that Hogwarts has over 200 unique rooms, each with its own lighting setup. Twenty-four million copies sold made it the top-grossing game of 2023, and three years later it still earns its spot here.

4K Ultra with RT pushes VRAM past 16 GB. The RTX 5090 holds 90-110 fps; the RTX 4090 lands around 65-80 fps. Hogsmeade and the surrounding forests are where things get nasty. Dense volumetric lighting plus dozens of NPCs with their own shadows. UE4 may live in UE5's shadow these days, but a clean implementation can still bring high-end hardware to its knees.

Respawn Entertainment shipped Survivor on April 28, 2023, on Unreal Engine 4 with ray tracing for reflections and ambient occlusion. The PC port was a disaster at launch. Shader compilation stutters, traversal hitching, miserable 1% lows, the works. Patch 9 in July 2024 fixed most of it, which is great news if you waited and slightly less great news if you bought it day one.

Even now, 4K Ultra with RT pushes the RTX 4090 below 60 fps on Koboh and Jedha. The RTX 5090 manages 75-95 fps with DLSS Quality. Lightsaber fights with all the particle effects and dynamic shadows are where the GPU really hurts. The game wants 155 GB on disk, so keep that in mind. DLSS 4 in Performance mode actually holds up surprisingly well here, so don't be afraid to use it. Your eyes won't notice; your frame counter will.

Guerrilla Games and Nixxes brought the Forbidden West port to PC on March 21, 2024, and the Decima engine got a serious upgrade. Full ray tracing support, ultrawide up to 32:9, and finally an unlocked frame rate. The map is around 30% bigger than the first Horizon, with underwater zones added.

Dense jungle and vegetation-heavy areas are where Decima starts struggling, since it's rendering thousands of unique plants with individual physics and lighting. Fight a Thunderjaw at 4K Ultra and the RTX 5090 sits at 75-95 fps; the RTX 4090 manages 55-70 fps with DLSS Quality. The machines with their metallic surfaces are the showcase for ray-traced reflections. Watch one up close and you understand the appeal. Disk footprint is 90 GB. VRAM target: 16 GB minimum, 20 GB if you want it smooth.

Sandfall Interactive, a small French team, dropped Clair Obscur on April 24, 2025, and went all-in on UE5 with Nanite and Lumen. The world is a love letter to French Belle Époque and art nouveau, and the geometry is so dense that traditional LOD systems are basically pointless. Nanite happily renders billions of triangles per frame, and your GPU happily melts trying to keep up.

4K Epic eats 18-22 GB of VRAM. The RTX 5090 holds 70-90 fps with DLSS Quality, the RTX 4090 dips to 50-65 fps. Turn off DLSS in full path tracing and even the best cards drop below 40 fps. The soundtrack by Lorien Testard, with several tracks performed by Mariam Abounnasr, picked up critical acclaim of its own. Over a million copies sold in the first month, a serious result for a turn-based RPG from a tiny studio that nobody outside France had heard of two years ago.

Techland out of Wrocław released Dying Light 2 on February 4, 2022. The Bloody Ties update from November 2022 brought ray tracing for global illumination and reflections, and post-apocalyptic Villedor changed character overnight. Sunlight filters through broken roofs, neon reflects in puddles after rain. The kind of stuff you don't notice until you turn it off, and then you can't go back.

4K with full RT puts the RTX 4090 at 45-55 fps, the RTX 5090 over 70 fps. CPU starts to struggle when you trigger a horde of 50+ zombies with full ragdoll and environmental destruction. The Tower Raids DLC from 2024 added new towers to clear. The game wants 60 GB on disk. DLSS and FSR both work well here, so on weaker hardware start with FSR 3 and Frame Generation. It gets you to 60 fps without major artifacts.

RTX 5090 vs RTX 4090: is the upgrade worth it?

After running through these ten titles, the answer depends on what you're doing. The RTX 5090 averages 35-50% faster than the RTX 4090 in pure rasterization, 40-60% faster in ray tracing, and DLSS 4 with Multi Frame Generation can push frame counts up by 4x in supported games. This is the biggest generational jump since Pascal (GTX 1080 Ti) to Turing (RTX 2080 Ti). Bigger than most people expected.

For 1440p gaming, the RTX 4090 still does the job, and it's not even close. DLSS Quality is invisible at that resolution, and you save serious money. For 4K Ultra with RT and zero compromises, the RTX 5090 is the only card that delivers without falling back to Performance DLSS. The 32 GB of VRAM also gives you a 2-3 year buffer as Unreal Engine 5 keeps getting hungrier. And based on what's coming in 2026 and 2027, "hungrier" is putting it politely. Your call. Budget vs the urge to max everything out.
