About Wager of Banners

Wager of Banners - about the game

Wager of Banners is a strategy and simulation game for PC in which players manage a tavern on a small island filled with competing villages. The experience centers on incremental growth through trade and careful resource allocation rather than large-scale conquest from the outset. Players begin with a single establishment that produces ale and gradually expand by acquiring new buildings paid for with goods already in hand.

Gameplay

Each morning a deck of cards is dealt, and the player assigns those cards to doors across the island. The value of any given card changes depending on the state of the target village. A card that yields two coins in a sparse settlement can return six in a developed one where neighboring buildings have been constructed or tradesmen have been placed. This system encourages players to read the board and adapt assignments daily as villages evolve.

Villagers arrive with individual names, preferred trades, and quirks that trigger bonuses in specific situations. Fenn of the Long Table, for example, adds two extra ale each night when stationed behind the bar yet cannot withstand a serious argument. These named characters bring permanence and personality to the management loop, turning routine staffing decisions into meaningful choices about risk and reward.

Raids occur asynchronously. Raising a war banner alerts the island, after which a duel unfolds at midnight regardless of whether the player is present. Combat resolves as best-of-three rounds with both champions striking simultaneously. The defender holds the advantage of home ground, and the chosen fighter misses a full day of work. Defeated opponents are captured rather than killed and serve the victor permanently. Emptying a village of its people transfers its treasury, stores, and assembled cards to the conqueror.

Game Modes

Two primary ways to experience the island exist. In singleplayer, the player competes against AI-controlled villages that pursue their own growth and expansion goals. Seasons advance at the pace set by the table, with nights resolving automatically so the focus remains on daily card placement and long-term planning.

Multiplayer allows multiple stewards to share the same island. Each participant manages their own establishments and villagers while raids and conquests play out between human opponents. The asynchronous nature of combat means matches can progress without requiring simultaneous presence.

Core Systems and Progression

Progression follows a strict economic chain. Six establishments form the foundation, each unlocked only after the player generates the required goods from existing operations. The daily deck reshuffles completely, ensuring fresh assignments every morning while cards continue to evaluate the surrounding board state. Villagers range from common laborers to rare legends, each carrying unique perks that reward careful placement behind the bar, in workshops, or on defensive duties.

Conquest replaces traditional combat attrition. Captured fighters never return to their original villages, creating a snowball effect where successful raids strengthen the attacker and weaken rivals simultaneously. This permanent transfer of labor and assets rewards sustained pressure over decisive single battles.

Is It Worth Playing?

Wager of Banners suits players who enjoy deliberate, board-driven strategy with strong economic and management layers. The daily card ritual combined with named villagers and asynchronous raids creates a loop that rewards observation and long-term positioning rather than rapid reflexes. Those who prefer direct control over every action or fast-paced action sequences may find the pace too measured. The game offers both solitary campaigns against AI and shared islands with other players, providing flexibility for different preferences in competition and pacing. Its indie scale keeps the focus narrow on tavern growth, village interactions, and the consequences of raids, making it a targeted choice for fans of simulation strategy rather than a broad appeal title.
