About The Deep Calls

The Deep Calls - about the game

The Deep Calls is a turn based Lovecraftian roguelite dungeon crawler that blends strategy and RPG elements into a single player experience on PC. Players assemble small parties of customizable heroes, descend into branching underground dungeons, and face permanent consequences with no option to retreat once an expedition begins. The core loop revolves around preparing heroes through unlocks and equipment, navigating uncertain paths filled with combat, encounters, and resources, then returning to a central hub to refine builds for future runs.

Gameplay

Heroes start with one of three Disciplines that set initial skills, roles, and bonuses. Progression allows unlocking new Skills and signature Powers while spending shared XP to upgrade attributes and abilities. Players mix these into loadouts, equip Weapons, Armor, Helms, and Charms that carry both benefits and drawbacks, and select two Traits per hero that modify stats, alter skills, or impose sacrifices for added strength. No character stays locked into one function because Discipline forms only the base while equipment, unlocks, and experience shape the final build.

Combat splits between solo encounters against basic enemies and full party battles against elites or bosses. In solo fights the selected hero handles threats alone. In party combat the arranged order dictates action sequence before enemies respond, influencing damage timing, protection availability, and survival chances. Available actions include direct attacks, defensive Skills, healing, buffs, debuffs, and damage over time effects such as Bleed, Burn, and Blight. Block accumulation absorbs hits while persistent defenses and resistance manipulation support combined strategies across the group.

The Forge system merges items to create new effects. Two consumables combine into a Strong Item that carries both properties, with options to intensify matching effects or diversify through different components. Equipment fuses similarly, with the left anvil position determining the final type and the result inheriting all mechanical traits including bonuses, triggers, penalties, and self inflicted consequences. Forged pieces cannot be reforged later, and some rare objects remain ineligible, so each combination requires careful planning.

Game Modes

Expeditions begin with a choice of Quest or Challenge that modifies objectives and difficulty. Quests add specific goals such as defeating extra Horrors, avoiding healing items, reaching the boss unharmed, fighting without Equipment, or finishing through damage over time effects. Success yields rewards while failure deducts resources like Gold or XP. Challenges reshape the dungeon by granting enemies extra Strength, Block, regeneration, or resistances, or by applying starting conditions to heroes such as Bleeding, Blighted, Weakened, or resource shortages. These modifiers create fresh build challenges and encourage repeated Forge use.

Branching corridors define each dungeon layout. Scouting reveals some upcoming rooms while others stay hidden until chosen. Possible encounters include solo or party combat, Terrifying Horrors, recovery Camps, Treasure caches, Equipment finds, Merchants, surgeons, black market traders, and Strange events that deliver lasting rewards or penalties. Health carries over between fights, supplies remain limited, and the final Boss blocks the exit. Defeating dungeon bosses raises Quest Level, which strengthens later enemies and leads toward a Chapter Boss deeper below.

Progression and Preparation

Successful returns to the haunted house hub allow training in the Gym, growing consumables in the Garden, purchasing supplies, exchanging Traits, unlocking further Skills and Powers, and processing loot through the Forge. Each expedition expands available options for the next party. Heroes carry permanent value because death removes all their unlocks and upgrades, requiring rediscovery before reuse. This permanence shapes decisions around risk, resource management, and long term roster development.

Is It Worth Playing?

The Deep Calls targets players who enjoy deep customization, turn based tactical combat, and roguelite runs with lasting consequences. The Discipline system, Forge combinations, and Quest or Challenge modifiers provide repeated reasons to experiment with hero builds and party compositions. Single player focus keeps attention on individual strategy and careful path choices through uncertain dungeons. As an unreleased title planned for Q4 2026, its appeal rests on the described mechanics of hero shaping, item fusion, and high stakes expeditions rather than current player data. Those drawn to Lovecraftian themes paired with strategic party management and permanent progression losses will find the core systems align closely with that preference.
