Starmoor is an indie casual puzzle game for PC that turns real astronomy into a relaxing stargazing experience. Players brush mist from a hand-painted night sky to locate actual constellations using accurate stellar data. The simulation draws from 5,044 catalogue stars and all 88 recognized constellations, positioned according to any chosen location, date, and time.
Gameplay
The core loop centers on careful observation and pattern matching. Reference cards display each constellation's shape and approximate screen size. Players clear mist with the mouse, select matching stars, and submit a guess by tapping the card. Real coordinates, magnitudes, and color information drive the positions, while artistic crayon and watercolour rendering handles brightness and atmosphere. No prior knowledge of star charts or calculations is required. The process rewards close attention to relative star arrangements rather than memorization.
Players select any of more than 34,000 cities or input custom coordinates to recreate skies from specific places and moments. This allows revisiting nights above a hometown, shifting seasons, or exploring the opposite hemisphere. The experience stays single-player focused, though scored sessions connect players through shared global elements like hidden lucky constellations.
Game Modes
Three distinct modes support different play styles and session lengths. Stargazing Night runs for ten minutes and awards points for each identified constellation, with first discoveries earning double points. Eternity in a Glance limits sessions to three minutes under the same scoring rules. Free Roam removes time limits and scoring entirely, allowing unrestricted exploration of the sky.
Background music from a jukebox selection of piano, blues, ambient, and organ tracks accompanies all modes. At the end of scored sessions, the night transitions to dawn while discoveries are recorded in an album. Players can generate a constellation card featuring their chosen ship and save or share the image.
Progression and Customization
Discovery leads to a collection of 108 airships, each tied to a unique appearance and astronomy fact. The first ship from each family starts unlocked. Additional ships are earned through Starlight Coins and Bole points gained from gameplay scores. These cosmetic items alter how a player appears in others' skies without affecting abilities or advantages.
Global leaderboards influence the sky for everyone. The three highest lifetime scorers appear in a parade, while daily World Tour auction winners and up to two companions join them. Bids use only earned Starlight Coins, with no option to purchase currency.
Is It Worth Playing?
Starmoor suits players seeking a calm, observational puzzle experience grounded in real astronomy. The hand-painted aesthetic and accurate star placement create a distinctive atmosphere that rewards patience and visual focus. Sessions can last just a few minutes or extend into longer free-form play, making it accessible for short breaks or extended evenings.
Ownership is a one-time purchase with no in-app purchases or additional costs. The Steam version runs on Windows and macOS, though online features require an internet connection. Accounts link across platforms for save syncing while keeping purchases separate. With its emphasis on genuine celestial data and relaxed mechanics, the game appeals to those interested in astronomy, cozy puzzles, or low-pressure single-player sessions. Early availability shows no widespread player feedback yet, so expectations should align with its niche focus on quiet discovery rather than action or competition.
