Sort In Silence is an indie simulation game set in a dimly lit university library where players restore order to thousands of scattered books while avoiding detection by a watchful presence named Mika.
Gameplay
The core loop centers on collecting books from the floor, identifying their correct sections, and shelving them one slot at a time. Each successful first placement, completed shelf, and finished zone generates money that funds upgrades on the library computer. These upgrades include faster movement speed, greater carrying capacity, location guides for books, and options for chain or batch shelving. Progress feels methodical yet tense because every action risks drawing attention. Mika responds to speed, running, loud talking, and even real microphone input through proximity voice chat. Her reactions escalate from shushes and book-throwing to full blackouts where she whispers in the dark and may appear suddenly behind the player. When patience runs out she transforms into one of four increasingly dangerous forms and begins hunting through the aisles. Survival tools include a flashlight to hold her back temporarily, light switches and fuse boxes to restore power, and hiding spots such as wardrobes or tables. Staying silent during inspections is essential because the microphone remains active. The library holds up to 8,500 books, each with a designated place, creating a satisfying sense of completion as zones fill up.
Game Modes
Players can tackle the library alone or invite up to three friends for online co-op. In group play the library scales with the number of participants, shared money pools fund collective upgrades, and teammates can revive downed players. Proximity voice chat supports coordination but every spoken word risks alerting Mika. A hardcore mode adds extra stakes with only one life per run, ending the attempt upon death. Work orders appear during shifts to reward extra tools, and 21 permanent perks plus eight single-use items such as decoys, a truce box, a protective amulet, and a first-aid kit provide strategic variety. The experience supports keyboard and mouse or controller input across ten interface languages.
Atmosphere and Tension
The PSX-style visuals emphasize a cramped, poorly lit space where shadows and sudden darkness heighten unease. Scares vary across runs with empty chairs, distant whispers during blackouts, and unexpected appearances at the computer. Four distinct forms of Mika ensure hunts grow more intense as more of the library is restored. The combination of precise sorting tasks and reactive horror creates a unique rhythm: periods of quiet focus interrupted by sudden threats that demand quick thinking and silence.
Early Access Status
The game launched in Early Access with the complete university library and Mika as the sole location. Additional locations are planned based on player feedback. Forty Steam achievements, a fastest-time leaderboard, and Steam Cloud support are already available. The current build focuses on refining the core sorting and survival systems within this single expansive environment.
Is It Worth Playing?
Sort In Silence suits players who enjoy deliberate simulation tasks paired with asymmetric horror and voice-based tension. The shared upgrades and co-op revival mechanics encourage teamwork, while the microphone integration adds a personal layer of risk not found in most sorting or survival titles. Those who prefer methodical progress with sudden high-stakes moments will find the library a compelling setting. The Early Access state means the experience centers on one polished location, making it a focused entry point for fans of quiet coordination and escalating threats.
