About My General

My General - about the game

My General is a strategy game set in the fractured realm of Ordara, where players take command of armies across four isles torn by war after the death of the last emperor. The title places you in the role of a rising general who begins as a farmer's son and grows into a leader of regiments and entire campaigns. Battles unfold on varied terrain that includes hills, woods, rivers, and shifting weather, with every decision about positioning, timing strikes, and committing reserves carrying direct consequences on the outcome.

Gameplay

Core gameplay centers on real-time command of forces where terrain and preparation determine success. Players choose where to hold ground, when to launch attacks, and how to exploit enemy weaknesses through careful army composition and positioning. Hills provide defensive advantages, woods offer concealment, rivers create natural barriers, and weather alters movement and visibility. Each engagement rewards reading the opposing force and forcing them into unfavorable conditions rather than relying on raw numbers.

Unit progression forms another key layer. Recruits start in basic wool caps and borrowed spears but gain upgrades to armor and weapons that appear visibly on the battlefield models. Specializing in a single faction allows creation of a personal retinue, complete with custom coat of arms on shields, chosen armor colors, and selected weapons that carry the player's reputation into every fight.

Sieges add vertical and structural depth. Attackers deploy ladders, battering rams, and siege towers against fortified towns while defenders repel waves from the walls. Success depends on coordinating the climb with supporting fire and managing the race between breaching forces and the garrison holding out. Naval combat extends the same principles to open water, where fleets close for boarding actions or attempt ramming maneuvers with no safe retreat available.

Game Modes

Players can engage in online battles supporting up to four versus four participants. Teams can form with friends to face computer-controlled opponents or enter a ranked ladder to test individual skill against other commanders. Retinues travel with the player across these matches, preserving custom heraldry and unit appearances as a signature force.

Single-player progression follows the general's rise through successive commands, starting with small regiments and expanding to full armies. Faction choice influences available rosters and tactical options, encouraging either deep specialization in one people or broader mastery across multiple styles. All twenty-six factions bring distinct units, generals, and equipment drawn from historical inspirations such as Anglo-Saxon shield walls, northern raiders, Mongol horse archers, Song dynasty spears, Kamakura samurai, and Jerusalem crusader knights, totaling more than two thousand regiments overall.

Factions and Army Building

Each of the twenty-six factions operates with unique strengths and no single roster designed to dominate all others. Anglo-Saxon forces emphasize disciplined shield walls, steppe riders rely on mobile archery, Song armies field dense spear formations, and crusader knights bring heavy cavalry charges. Over two thousand individual regiments allow extensive customization when building forces for any given battle.

Army building extends beyond initial selection. Upgrades to weapons and armor apply directly to visible unit appearances, while retinue customization lets dedicated players design personal heraldry and equipment loadouts that persist across engagements. This system rewards investment in one faction for cohesive, recognizable forces or experimentation across several for varied tactical approaches.

Is It Worth Playing?

My General remains in active development with an open playtest available for those interested in shaping the final experience through feedback on battles and systems. The combination of terrain-driven tactics, large-scale faction variety, and both competitive multiplayer and progressive single-player elements targets players who enjoy deliberate command decisions over fast-paced action. Those drawn to historical-inspired strategy with visible unit progression and flexible army composition will find the core loop rewarding, particularly if they value planning counters and adapting to battlefield conditions. The playtest phase offers an opportunity to experience the current state and contribute to refinements before full release.
