About Mend

Mend - about the game

Mend is an indie casual simulation sports title focused on realistic fly fishing. Set across authentic waterways in the Canadian Rockies, it recreates river environments using elevation data, actual paths, and flow rates so that riffles, pools, seams, and log jams appear exactly where they exist in real life.

Gameplay

The core loop centers on locating fish, reading the water, and delivering a precise drift. Players use a three-click cast meter that controls line length, power, and accuracy while determining how much straight line versus slack lands on the water. Slack provides the natural drift essential for success.

Once the fly is on the water, the mend mechanic comes into play. Current pulls the line and creates drag on the fly. Holding, pointing, and releasing at the right moment flips the line upstream to restore a drag-free drift. Timing proves critical for maintaining the presentation that trout find irresistible.

Fly selection adds depth. Anglers choose dries fished on the surface, nymphs suspended under an indicator, or streamers stripped through deeper runs. At camp, players tie their own flies using materials purchased from local suppliers. The take registers as a visible rise or subtle indication, after which the fight requires managing rod angle, line tension, reel speed, and drag settings to land the fish without breaking it off.

Twenty-three rivers span Alberta's Eastern Slopes and British Columbia's Kootenays. A seasonal calendar advances time, rolling daily weather that includes chinook winds, clouds, rain, snow, and shore ice. Matching hatches bring fish to the surface. Species such as rainbow, brown, brook, and cutthroat trout, along with bull trout, mountain whitefish, and cutbow hybrids occupy the precise lies their real-world counterparts prefer. Wildlife including osprey, otters, and moose appear along the banks.

Every landed fish yields a photograph opportunity. Proper framing and keeping the fish wet before release generate income. Earnings fund gear, licenses, and fly-tying supplies at Earl's camp shop, with additional purchases from Walt for feathers. Back roads lead to new water, and long-term goals include acquiring the old fly shop in the Crowsnest Pass.

Game Modes

Campaign mode structures progression through guided lessons and objectives. Free Fish mode emphasizes relaxed angling without strict goals, while Free Play opens the full map for unstructured exploration. Difficulty settings include Normal for a laid-back experience and Realism, which makes fish more selective and demanding.

Online multiplayer supports up to four anglers sharing a river. Sessions can focus on catching the biggest fish or the greatest number of fish. Supporting features include a fishing journal, a built-in guide to fly fishing techniques, bird photography opportunities, Steam achievements, and leaderboards tracking the largest fish per river and species. Full controller support ensures comfortable play on various input devices.

Progression and Atmosphere

Earl's lesson serves as a gentle tutorial suitable for complete beginners and experienced anglers alike. The economy ties directly into photography and careful fish handling, encouraging players to document catches rather than keep them. Seasonal changes and dynamic weather alter hatches and fish behavior, rewarding observation of the environment. The simulation emphasizes calm pacing, with mechanics that mirror real fly-fishing actions such as casting, mending, and fighting fish through rod and line management.

Is It Worth Playing?

Mend suits players seeking a deliberate, detail-oriented simulation of fly fishing rather than fast-paced action. Its verified systems for casting, mending, fly choice, and fish fights deliver a focused experience on real Canadian river data. Campaign structure provides direction, while free modes and multiplayer options accommodate different preferences for solo relaxation or shared competition. Realism settings increase challenge for those wanting warier fish, and the progression through photography and shop upgrades adds light goals without pressure. Those who enjoy methodical mechanics and authentic environmental recreation will find the game aligns closely with its described features. Availability on PC with controller support broadens accessibility for the target audience.
