About Magehold Fairwinds

Magehold Fairwinds - about the game

Magehold Fairwinds is a strategy indie RPG simulation game set in a world where players captain the Tallow Hen, a cargo airship burdened by debt to the Carriers' Guild. The core experience revolves around guiding this patched vessel through five acts across nine regions, from river docks and crystal cliffs to beastborn aeries, gnome clock-cities, the lawless Reaches, and the great houses of Crown Peak, ultimately reaching the Hush Front where magic drains from the world.

Gameplay

Gameplay centers on real-time ship management with pause functionality. The vessel appears as a cutaway diagram of interconnected rooms, each serving a distinct purpose such as the Helm, Drive, Battery Deck, Casting Room, and wind shields. Players route power flow between these areas, assign targets for the ship's guns, extinguish fires, repair breaches, and restore the Keel to prevent sinking. Combat occurs room by room, with decisions made on the fly or during pauses to issue orders.

Armament includes 18 weapons across five families, covering elemental batteries that deliver fire, frost, stone, water, or air effects, along with sunlance beams, ballistae, repeaters, crystal mortars, grapeshot, and the Hush Lens. Thirty spells in five elements are cast by crew mages from the Casting Room, allowing targeted strikes on enemy rooms, counters against opposing casters, or defenses against boarders in the ship's corridors. Defensive options feature wind shields, rams, element disks, constructs, and a lookout's glimpse into enemy hulls.

Boarding actions add another layer, as players fire a Boarding Harpoon to enter an enemy room, hold the line with marines, sabotage systems like the Drive, or compel surrender for prizes. The reverse risk applies when enemies board the Tallow Hen, requiring players to seal doors, lock bulkheads, and fight corridor to corridor. Ground excursions occur at certain waypoints, where parties of up to four explore magehold dungeons, drowned libraries, academy ruins, and wrecks chamber by chamber, battling monsters and bound elementals while managing traps and carrying out loot.

Crew management forms a key system. Recruits come from humans and beastborn across ten lineages, plus academy mages, wild casters, gnome tinkers, and emberkin. Individuals gain skills, perks, and traits based on experiences, form bonds, and react to losses. A memorial wall tracks fallen crew members. Over 480 events at waypoints branch according to crew composition, ship upgrades, and faction standing, with choices involving contraband transport, contracts, inspections, and alliances.

Ship customization offers depth through 11 unlockable airships, each with three layouts, and a refit yard for rearranging rooms, adding plating and fittings, and balancing weight against fuel. Fifty-eight fittings provide varied effects, supplemented by crew devices and clockwork constructs. Nine boss encounters punctuate voyages, featuring threats like the Collector and debt cutters, the Tallowmere, the Stormmother, the clockwork Orrery, and the Pale Regatta, alongside encounters with skywyrms, storm-rays, and crystal leviathans.

Game Modes

The primary mode consists of roguelite voyages across seeded charts that can be shared or selected as the Daily Charter. Three difficulty settings, referred to as the Winds, scale the challenge, while Red Ink marks from 1 to 15 provide additional layers for experienced captains. Each run generates new crews, charts, and decision trees, with most voyages ending in failure and successful ones allowing debt repayment or ship retention for further runs.

Progression ties into a Ledger of feats that unlocks additional ships, lineages, captains, and regions. One hundred Steam achievements track specific accomplishments. The structure supports multiple playthroughs through its procedural elements and three distinct endings determined by choices and outcomes.

Key Systems and Progression

Resource and faction management intersect with combat and exploration. Players navigate inspections, contracts, and relationships that influence available options at waypoints. Crew bonds and grief mechanics add narrative weight, as losses affect morale and future events. The airship itself evolves through refits, with room layouts and fittings altering combat effectiveness and survival odds against environmental hazards and enemies.

Dungeon delves provide breaks from aerial combat, emphasizing party-based exploration and resource scavenging. These segments integrate with the larger voyage, supplying items or resolving issues that cannot be handled from the sky. The overall loop encourages experimentation with crew assignments, weapon targeting, and spell usage while adapting to the consequences of prior decisions.

Is It Worth Playing?

Magehold Fairwinds suits players who enjoy detailed ship management, tactical combat pauses, and roguelite runs with persistent progression through unlocks and crew stories. Its blend of real-time decisions, boarding mechanics, and ground exploration creates varied sessions focused on risk assessment and adaptation. The seeded charts and Daily Charter support repeated attempts, while difficulty options and Red Ink marks accommodate different experience levels. Those drawn to indie strategy titles with RPG crew elements and simulation depth will find the systems rewarding, particularly when balancing debt repayment against the urge to continue voyages. Availability on PC allows access to the full feature set, including multiple languages and cloud saves with autosave on every screen.
