About Long Dives

Long Dives - about the game

Long Dives is a strategy indie simulation game built around incremental progression on the ocean floor. Players begin in the sunlit Shallows with a single generator and expand an outpost by collecting power, minerals, and biomass. The core loop centers on steady resource growth followed by a Dive that resets the current setup while granting permanent pearl upgrades to reach deeper layers.

Gameplay

The game unfolds across ten named depths that grow progressively darker and more demanding. After the initial Shallows come the Dark, the Cinders, the Fissure, the Hadal Zone, and the Rift. Four additional depths open only after Ascension, culminating at the Nadir. Each new layer introduces fresh buildings and resource demands while the outpost continues to produce materials even during offline periods of up to twenty-four hours.

Automation arrives through the Procurement Daemon, which handles buying, building, and balancing resources according to player-set rules. Surplus materials can be sold automatically on the resource exchange with customizable per-resource settings. Four separate tech trees cover topics such as drill efficiency and time dilation, allowing steady upgrades that compound over time. Expeditions send a submersible out for contracts and urgent orders, while long-haul Charters add further tasks that reward careful planning and timing.

Game Modes

Standard play focuses on steady expansion and repeated Dives for upgrades. Challenge dives impose strict limitations such as Cold Dark, Silent Running, and Iron Sub, each altering resource availability or equipment rules to test different strategies. Contracts and Charters function as time-sensitive side objectives that run alongside normal progression, while expeditions add rescue missions for stranded haulers. These systems create varied pacing without requiring separate game instances.

Prestige operates in three distinct layers. A standard Dive resets the outpost for pearls. Ascension through the Rift resets accumulated Dives and unlocks new content. Covenants with the deep provide rule-bending options that further alter future runs. Each layer reveals additional story fragments stored in the Archive and the Signal, along with references to an unseen observer known as the Reader.

Progression and Upgrades

Resource management stays central throughout. Early generators give way to automated systems that scale production across multiple depths. Offline gains encourage periodic check-ins rather than constant play. The twenty-seven treasures scattered through the depths serve as long-term collection goals that tie into both standard and challenge runs. Events triggered by the environment add occasional interruptions that require quick adjustments to the outpost layout or expedition plans.

Tech research branches support specialized builds. One path improves extraction tools, another manipulates time flow, and the remaining two focus on efficiency and automation depth. These choices influence how quickly a player can push into new layers and how effectively the Procurement Daemon operates once activated.

Is It Worth Playing?

Long Dives suits players who enjoy incremental strategy games with layered prestige systems and steady offline progress. The combination of resource automation, expedition management, and rule-altering Covenants provides multiple avenues for optimization without relying on real-time action. Those who prefer short sessions can focus on contracts and quick Dives, while longer playthroughs benefit from tech tree planning and treasure collection. The fifty achievements, three of which remain secret, offer clear completion targets that track both standard and challenge progress. Availability on PC keeps the experience accessible for incremental fans seeking a focused ocean-floor simulation.
