About Hearsay

Hearsay - about the game

Hearsay is an indie casual adventure game for PC built around listening to and sorting fragments of real historical audio recordings. Players step into the role of an archivist restoring a disorganized collection of public domain material from the Library of Congress, using only their ears to match pieces to the correct categories and sequences.

Gameplay

The core loop centers on nine labeled cabinets that represent distinct categories of early twentieth century sound. Fragments arrive unlabeled on shelves, benches, and the floor. Each one plays when placed on the deck, revealing brass bands, ragtime pieces, opera excerpts, vaudeville routines, parlor songs, or spoken street interviews from 1950s and 1960s New York. Immediate visual feedback in the form of colored indicators shows whether a placement matches the right cabinet, the right recording within that cabinet, or the correct order among its peers. A separate workbench allows players to lay out several fragments at once, reorder them freely, play segments in sequence, or compare two pieces simultaneously in stereo without any penalty for experimentation.

Successful restoration of a full recording grants splices that unlock upgrades. These include manual scrubbing of tape, looping short sections, speed adjustments, increased carrying capacity, a trolley for moving multiple items, label printing, and ledger tools for cross referencing. Controls support both keyboard and controller, with every key rebindable and physical key binding preserved for non QWERTY layouts. Three distinct graphics presets alter the visual presentation meaningfully rather than simply relabeling options, and the game runs entirely offline with no telemetry or account requirements.

Game Modes

Hearsay offers a single continuous experience without separate modes or multiplayer components. Progress unfolds through the gradual clearing of the archive floor, with the five personal tapes left by the previous occupant appearing naturally as space opens up. These recordings provide the only spoken narrative outside the puzzle fragments and remain fully subtitled when enabled in settings.

Accessibility and Design Choices

The puzzle requires functional hearing because solutions depend entirely on auditory matching rather than text or visual cues. Transcripts are deliberately omitted from the fragments to preserve the intended challenge. Support for hard of hearing players includes a mono audio toggle that combines stereo channels, independent volume sliders for master, fragment, effects, and ambience tracks, and an optional shape based confirmation system alongside color indicators. The color palette has been tested for common forms of color blindness. Motor accessibility benefits from fully rebindable inputs, controller support, and the complete absence of timed events or reflex demands. Visual options cover field of view, mouse sensitivity, and Y axis inversion.

Is It Worth Playing?

Hearsay suits players who enjoy deliberate, audio focused puzzle solving and have an interest in early recorded sound. The absence of time pressure, failure states, or missable content makes it approachable for those who prefer to explore at their own pace. The historical recordings themselves form the central attraction, and the upgrade system gradually expands the tools available for handling larger numbers of fragments. Because the game remains unreleased, no player reviews or long term support details exist yet. Those drawn to patient listening exercises and the satisfaction of reassembling complete performances from scattered pieces will find the described systems align directly with that preference. Individuals who rely primarily on visual or textual information for puzzles should consider the hearing requirement before purchase.
