About Gremlins, Inc.

Gremlins, Inc. - about the game

Gremlins, Inc. is a digital strategy board game set in a steampunk world where players control corrupt capitalist gremlins vying for money, political power, and prestige. Up to six participants compete through a mix of resource management, direct interference, and tactical card play on one of two distinct boards. The title blends single-player options against AI opponents with competitive multiplayer sessions that emphasize interaction and long-term planning.

Gameplay

Each player begins with six cards drawn from a shared deck of 201 cards, most of them unique. Cards fall into permanent, regular, secret, and criminal categories, and every card serves dual purposes: advancing a gremlin across the board or triggering an action. The board features eleven locations such as the Office, the Plant, the Dump, the Marketplace, the Inferno, the Jail, the Casino, the Court, the Treasure, the Bank, and the Astral Plane, connected by seven spot types including Risk, Gamble, Police, Income, Bribe, Misfortune, and Tribune.

Resources tracked during play include score, money, votes, malice, income, and bribes. A separate Misfortune deck introduces forty events that can shift standings for all players at key moments. Optional layers such as six Chaos Cards and twelve sets of Character Abilities allow sessions to vary in complexity. Two boards, the Clockwork Town and the Clockwork Colony, present different strategic layouts and challenges.

Decisions occur every round as players balance accumulation of resources with efforts to disrupt opponents through theft, arrests, or other confrontations. Short-term tactics focus on immediate positioning and card effects, while longer strategies involve building income streams and positioning for end-game scoring. The system supports comebacks even after significant setbacks because multiple resource types remain in play until the final round.

Game Modes

Players can join custom sessions with adjustable parameters or enter ranked matches that use matchmaking based on rating and place participants in leagues with ladders. Private password-protected games suit groups of friends. Team formats support 2x2, 3x3, or 2x2x2 configurations mixing human players and AI bots, where coordination between teammates becomes essential for victory.

Spectator mode lets observers watch ongoing sessions from within the client and communicate via messages and emoticons. Single-player options include more than ten preset challenges plus fully customizable matches against AI opponents of varying difficulty. Sessions can end by reaching a chosen score limit, completing an agreed number of rounds, or hitting a time limit, with quick duels finishing in under twenty minutes and longer four-player games extending beyond two hours.

Reconnect features keep multiplayer sessions viable if a participant temporarily drops, while single-player includes automatic save and load at every turn for flexible pacing.

Strategies and Session Variety

Half the game typically involves gathering resources and establishing advantages, while the other half centers on controlling rivals through arrests, theft, or engineered conflicts. Card combinations create emergent tactics that reward repeated play. Optional features such as Chaos Cards or Character Abilities can be toggled to emphasize different approaches, and the two boards reward distinct movement and positioning plans.

Seasonal updates have added new cards, Misfortunes, music, and balancing changes since the 2016 release, keeping the core deck fresh without altering fundamental rules. Tournaments occur regularly and draw large fields, supported by an anonymous mask system that ensures fair competition in ranked play.

Is It Worth Playing?

Gremlins, Inc. suits players who enjoy competitive strategy board games with heavy interaction and opportunities for clever interference. The mix of single-player challenges and multiplayer options, including team and spectator support, provides flexibility for different group sizes and skill levels. Recent user reviews remain mostly positive, reflecting continued engagement through ongoing free content updates and organized tournaments.

The game rewards those comfortable with planning around opponents rather than pure optimization against fixed systems. Its resource diversity and comeback mechanics maintain tension across sessions of varying lengths. Owners receive both the full online edition and a separate offline single-player version, broadening accessibility without additional cost.

  • Core loop centers on card-driven movement and actions across a shared board.
  • Team and ranked play add layers of coordination and competition.
  • Free seasonal updates and active tournament support sustain long-term interest.
