E-xode: ROM is a real-time strategy game set in a persistent shared galaxy where players command fleets across 729 sectors. The universe continues to evolve whether a player is logged in or not, creating a living environment driven by mining runs, trade, piracy and fleet movements. Developed by a single person who used generative AI for assets while writing the core code, the title blends elements of classic browser space games with modern fleet management in a 4X-inspired framework.
Gameplay
Players start in the secured Ethereal Expanse and expand outward through gates into regions where law enforcement thins and risk rises. Six minerals are available for mining, with the rarest voidglass located in the most dangerous outer sectors. Specialised hulls handle distinct roles: miners extract resources, haulers move cargo, and combat vessels escort or engage threats. Fleets form from these ships and operate under direct command from a capital ship bridge in real time.
Corporations allow players to group under a shared tag. Standing with the Nexus Protectorate or the Crimson Corsairs shifts based on actions, opening or closing opportunities in different regions. A passive skill tree supports character growth with unlimited free respec, letting pilots adapt their focus over time. The Broadcast board serves as an in-game channel for commanders to share information and coordinate.
Station trade and pirate encounters add economic layers. Every mining or hauling run carries risk in lawless space, where patrols do not operate and pirate stations accept business from any side. The galaxy grid of nine regions and 81 star systems encourages deliberate choices about how far to push into contested territory.
Game Modes
The core experience runs in the MMO universe, available to all players. This persistent shared space supports ongoing fleet operations, resource extraction and corporation activities without turns or waiting periods. The server advances the simulation continuously, so sectors and fleets remain active between sessions.
Paid time unlocks access to separate PvP and Tournament universes. These modes provide dedicated environments for competitive play and structured events beyond the standard MMO rules. Free accounts remain limited to one character and twenty ships, while time purchases expand capacity to three characters and one hundred ships per character along with Broadcast board posting rights.
Browser and desktop clients connect to the same account and galaxy, allowing seamless switching between platforms during the same session.
World and Progression
The setting draws from early browser space games and large-scale online universes where individual decisions affect the broader economy and security. Two major powers divide influence across the stars, and player standing with each carries lasting consequences. The in-world Codex documents factions, history and lore as the project develops.
Progression centres on fleet composition, resource management and reputation rather than traditional quest lines at this stage. Exploration rewards scale with distance from secured space, but every trip into the frontier represents a calculated gamble against pirates and thinner protection.
Is It Worth Playing?
E-xode: ROM suits players who enjoy persistent real-time strategy with economic and fleet elements in a space setting. The free MMO universe offers a complete entry point with no recurring subscription, while one-time time purchases remove limits and open competitive modes for those who want larger fleets or PvP focus. Development remains in Early Access with plans to deepen economy, combat and progression based on community input.
The single-developer approach and use of AI for assets mean the current version prioritises core systems over polished visuals or extensive quests. Those drawn to the idea of a galaxy that never pauses and the challenge of balancing mining, trade and combat in lawless space will find a focused experience shaped directly by player feedback. Support through time purchases funds further asset work and feature expansion.
