DustFall is a single-player descent roguelite shooter set in a world where alien life has overrun the surface and a scanning front forces players deeper underground. The core loop centers on blasting through layered ruins while managing constant pressure from above, using a fully destructible pixel-based terrain system that reacts to fire, explosions, and structural collapses.
Gameplay
The underground environment serves as both obstacle and tool. Players ignite oil slicks to spread flames through connected materials, detonate powder caches to carve paths through rock, and remove supports to trigger targeted cave-ins that can eliminate threats or block pursuit. Each action reshapes the immediate area, altering sightlines, escape routes, and enemy paths in real time. Starting payloads such as the Drill Round or Grenade establish an initial playstyle, after which three-way upgrade choices during each run allow enhancement of the current weapon, addition of passive abilities, or swapping to a new payload entirely. A surface scan advances steadily from the top, detecting players who linger too close to upper layers and summoning increasingly aggressive hunters. Digging past the scan's reach grants temporary safety, but progress requires reaching the bottom of each layer and defeating its core to descend further.
Game Modes
The primary experience consists of repeated single-player descents through six distinct buried ruins. Each layer features unique terrain materials, environmental interactions, enemy types, and a core boss encounter. Runs build toward one of three possible endings depending on choices and performance across the strata. After completing an ending, Cataclysm Mode becomes available as an additional challenge variant that alters run conditions.
The Six Layers
Progression unfolds across six separate ruins, each with its own set of physical properties and hazards. Terrain in one layer might emphasize flammable materials and spreading fire, while another focuses on brittle supports and large-scale collapses. Enemy ecosystems shift accordingly, presenting new threats that interact with the destructible environment. The ruins contain echoes of previous inhabitants who also sought refuge by digging downward, adding narrative context that deepens with each layer reached.
Is It Worth Playing?
DustFall suits players who enjoy roguelite structure combined with physics-driven destruction and constant forward pressure. The single-player focus keeps attention on individual decision-making around terrain manipulation and build crafting through payload and upgrade selections. As an Early Access title on PC, the game remains in active development with the six layers, three endings, and Cataclysm Mode already outlined in its design. Those drawn to methodical runs that reward creative use of the environment over traditional cover-based shooting will find the core systems rewarding, while the roguelite loop encourages repeated attempts to refine strategies and reach deeper layers.
