About Catch Command '98

Catch Command '98 - about the game

Catch Command '98 is a strategy RPG simulation game set on the PC that places players in charge of a small crab fishing company during the intense Bering Sea snow crab derby seasons from 1998 through 2005. The experience centers on managing three boats, handling finances, and directing skippers through realistic fishing operations amid changing regulations, weather, and competition from eight rival companies. Every decision affects catch volumes, boat safety, and long-term company survival as the fishery transitions from open derby fishing to quota shares by the final year.

Gameplay

Players act as a skipper who can either personally draw and soak strings of pots on the water or delegate boat operations to hired skippers while focusing on business choices. Hauling occurs pot by pot with attention to the sounder for crab location and radar for weather or other vessels. Soak times are chosen in advance, after which decisions follow on which pots return to the water and which come aboard. The game supports variable time compression from real time up to 5000 times faster, pausing automatically for urgent matters while allowing minor decisions to route to the office.

Skippers possess distinct personalities such as bold, careful, greedy, loyal, proud, iron, sharp, or drinker. Their opinion of the player influences performance, with devoted skippers working faster and following orders readily while disgruntled ones soak gear longer, refuse commands, demand larger shares, or eventually leave. Firing and hiring new skippers or poaching from rivals remains possible at any time. Business management includes selling catches at Dutch Harbor or St. Paul, monitoring the books, borrowing from the bank to purchase used boats or pots, and selling assets when necessary. Three boat types are available: a 110 ft crabber, a 125 ft converted supply boat, and an 88 ft schooner.

The Bering Sea environment includes historically accurate pack ice that closes ports in winter, gales that freeze spray on rails and stacked pots, and the risk of a tender boat listing or capsizing. Players must decide whether to cut the stack loose and lose pots or attempt to ride out the conditions. Storms appear on forecasts, squalls show on radar, and mechanical failures such as injured hands, engine trouble, or hydraulic issues on the pot block can occur. Crab move across the bottom and migrate down the slope through winter, with populations fished down by the entire fleet.

Game Modes

The core 1998 campaign spans eight seasons drawn from historical data, including NOAA trawl surveys for crab placement, Alaska Department of Fish and Game records for catch per block, guidelines, fleet sizes, prices, ice coverage, and closing dates. Seasons reflect real events such as the 1999 price dispute that kept catcher boats in port for three days, the 2000 crash with an 85 percent guideline cut and only eight fishing days, and the shortened six-day derby in 2005 that led to the quota system. Generated campaigns create a custom sea, survey, crab distribution, and weather from a seed, allowing play across multiple seasons or a single season. Both modes feature the same core systems of pot placement, soaking, hauling, selling, and rival interactions.

Rivals and Events

Eight rival companies operate forty boats that fish the same grounds, deliver catches, and communicate over radio. Without satellite tracking, information arrives through radar sightings, overheard dock deliveries, and radio chatter that may or may not be accurate. Actions such as assisting a rival in trouble or towing a boat build goodwill, while crossing strings or crowding gear creates hostility that affects future behavior. Between seasons rivals buy and sell boats or go out of business. Over 600 events cover Fish and Game inspections, boats corking one another, rival emergencies, skipper family matters, and closing announcements, with each choice producing tangible consequences for finances, relationships, or safety.

Is It Worth Playing?

Catch Command '98 delivers a detailed single-player simulation of commercial fishing management and on-water operations that rewards careful planning and adaptation to dynamic conditions. The combination of skipper personalities, realistic weather and ice mechanics, rival memory of past actions, and historically grounded campaign progression creates a focused experience for players interested in strategy and simulation genres. Those who enjoy managing resources, directing AI crews, and responding to unexpected events will find substantial depth in the systems for boat handling, financial decisions, and seasonal progression. The game suits individuals seeking a methodical, long-term campaign rather than fast-paced action or multiplayer competition.
