HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
Founded shortly after the time of the Roman conquest under Emperor Claudius in AD 43, Londinium soon became one of the great power centres of the Western Roman Empire, playing a pivotal role in key imperial events throughout its 400-year history.
Set in AD 215, in the reign of Emperor Caracalla and at the height of the city鈥檚 Severan revival, Londinium is being reshaped by imperial-era reforms and monumental investment: the port and riverside are expanded and renewed, waterfront temples and public buildings are restored and embellished, and the newly completed masonry walls rise around the city, defining its limits for over a millennium to come.
