What is Roads of Ruin? Rather than use more acronyms, let us describe practically what part of a game session might look like for you and some friends.
You start off in your camp, where you manage your resources, materials and spells to give you the best possible chance in preparation for your next mission. You and three other friends meet in town, collect a quest to retrieve some items from a nearby raided caravan and are ready to start your adventure. You queue into the quest map with dozens of other players- some friend, some foe.
You enter the map with your friends to search for your quest items and whatever else you can find. On your way to your quest objective you find some loot in NPC camps- you take what you can carry. Then, you come across another group of 4 players seeking to complete an entirely different quest. The moment is intense. Both sides sizing each other up and trying to understand each other's motives. One of them decides they would like to wear your armor and attacks. In a strategic MOBA-like battle your team defeats and loots more equipment and resources from the enemy team.
You are hurt from the battle. Decision time. Do you attempt to extract from the map? Or do you continue to try and complete your quest? These situations brought on by a unique blend of PvPvE, ARPG and extraction game mechanics are exactly what makes Roads of Ruin a thrilling game. Dozens of players, all with different motives will create conflict that will lead to a dynamic gameplay experience that you won't find anywhere else.
Your team decides to escape. You sneak past NPC camps, bypass NPC boss fights and make your way to an extraction point.
You live to fight another day, while your foes lost everything in the fight. You take the loot back to your town and your camp to make yourself stronger for the next fight.
