Gran Turismo 8: PS5 or PS6? What we know

Every Gran Turismo fan is asking the same thing right now: is Gran Turismo 8 going to be a PS5 game, or is Polyphony saving it for the PS6? It is the question with no clean answer yet, but there are some strong clues. Here is where things actually stand.

Gran Turismo is Sony's flagship racing sim, and it has always had a tight relationship with PlayStation hardware, usually acting as a showcase for whatever console it lands on. GT7 arrived on PS4 and PS5 in 2022 and has been steadily updated since, which makes the timing of GT8 the whole crux of the PS5-versus-PS6 debate.

PS5 or PS6: what we actually know

Nothing about GT8 is officially confirmed, so anyone claiming a hard date is guessing. What we can lean on is history and timing. Polyphony Digital tends to release roughly one mainline Gran Turismo per console generation, and it usually takes its time, with long gaps between numbered entries. GT7 also continues to receive major content updates, which is not the behavior of a studio about to drop its successor.

Line that up against the PS6, which is widely expected somewhere around the late 2020s, and the math starts to point toward GT8 being either a late-generation flagship or, more likely, a launch-window showcase for the next PlayStation, exactly the role GT games love to play. A cross-gen release spanning both is also very much on the table, given how Sony has handled recent big titles.

What to do in the meantime

The honest answer is that GT8 is probably further out than fans would like, and the smart move is to enjoy GT7 while it keeps getting fed new cars, tracks, and events. It is the most complete Gran Turismo has ever been, and it is the obvious way to scratch the itch until Polyphony is ready to talk about number eight.
