Fable: Release Date, Story, Gameplay, and What We Know So Far
The Fable series is returning after a 14-year absence, with Playground Games developing a complete overhaul. The game is set to launch in fall 2026, and a major highlight is its simultaneous release on PS5, marking the first time for the franchise.
The Fable series has been a hallmark of Xbox since the original game's debut in 2004, with follow-up titles establishing it as a beloved Western RPG featuring fairy tale elements. Following the shutdown of Lionhead Studios in 2016, the series faded from view for years. It is now being revived by Playground Games, the creators of Forza Horizon, who are crafting a reboot of Albion that includes an open world, more than a thousand voiced non-player characters, and a more mature tone. Notably, Microsoft has opted to release the game on PlayStation 5 as well, ending the era of exclusivity for the series on Xbox.
Fable - Release Date
The developers have not announced a specific release date yet; they have only confirmed a window of "fall 2026," with the exact day still to be determined. Given the history of delays for the project, Microsoft and Playground Games are proceeding carefully, so an official date is likely to be revealed at the Xbox Showcase 2026 or Summer Game Fest.
The game will be available at the same time on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. This represents the first entry in the series to launch on PlayStation from day one, indicating a shift in strategy from Xbox Game Studios. It will also be accessible immediately upon release through Xbox Game Pass, meaning subscribers won't need to pay extra. There will be no exclusivity period for either Sony or Microsoft platforms: all three will go live simultaneously.
Fable - PC System Requirements
Official minimum requirements have not been released. Playground Games typically shares full details a few months before launch, so the complete list is expected around summer 2026.
Recommended requirements are also to be announced. The studio uses its own ForzaTech engine, which is designed to adapt well to various hardware setups. Players can anticipate performance similar to the Forza Horizon series, which has been highly refined for PC. Until the official requirements are out, it's best not to speculate about specific graphics cards.
About Fable
The reboot's story unfolds in the classic Albion setting, a world inspired by fairy tales. The protagonist begins uncovering heroic abilities as a child. The narrative opens with a dramatic event: a mysterious figure turns the hero's grandmother and the villagers of Briar Hill to stone. Following this tragedy, the hero sets off on a grand quest across the land to uncover the source of the curse and find a way to reverse it. The environment blends traditional fantasy with surreal, occasionally dark visuals, as highlighted by Playground Games in their presentations.
In terms of gameplay, Fable is a traditional action RPG with an open world. Players customize their character and combine melee combat, ranged attacks, and magic as they see fit. The developers boast over a thousand individually voiced NPCs, aiming to make Albion feel dynamic and alive. The moral choice system from earlier games returns, affecting the character's reputation, appearance, and how the world responds. Players can purchase properties, form connections with locals, and enter any home in the game, with the latter being a key design focus for Playground Games.
Game editions have not been detailed yet. Microsoft is expected to unveil options like Standard and Deluxe, and possibly a Collector's edition, closer to release when preorders begin.
Fable - Price
The suggested retail price has not been set. Microsoft has not disclosed prices in any currency, so online figures are just guesses. Based on announcements from 2025 and 2026, a standard price around 69.99 USD is anticipated for Xbox Game Studios titles, but treat this as an estimate until an official statement.
In Poland, the standard version might cost between 309 and 349 PLN, depending on Microsoft Store policies and distributors. However, Game Pass owners can access the game without an additional purchase, as it will be added to the library on release day.
Preorder bonuses have not been revealed by Microsoft. The list of incentives for early orders is likely to emerge at the next Xbox Showcase.
What We Know About Fable
Playground Games is recognized for its excellent optimization and polished presentation: their Forza Horizon 5 remains one of the top-performing AAA titles on PC. The Fable reboot is being developed with support from Eidos-Montréal, Third Kind Games, and Blizzard Entertainment, underscoring its importance to Xbox as a whole. As the first new Fable in 14 years, it holds significant appeal for fans, and the decision to bring it to PlayStation 5 points to a major strategic pivot by Microsoft regarding its franchises. The title will be available on day one via Game Pass, and there are no specific DLC plans, aligning with the studio's approach of delivering a full experience at launch.
Once Microsoft announces the pricing, we will review the best deals and suggest where to find it at a lower cost than primary retailers.
